Can I use this in any software?

Yes, any software that can import obj with the files normals (you may have to specify to 'use file split normals' during the import process).

Why don't the .obj version materials look as nice as the .blend version?

.obj can only store basic material information, but you can replace these basic materials with materials specific to your 3d software.
